What you need to know about market volatility and your super

We understand that recent market movements may be causing concern. It’s natural to feel unsettled when headlines focus on uncertainty - but it’s important to remember that superannuation is a long-term investment.

Your ‘need to know’ info below

Market ups and downs happen

Throughout history, markets have gone through cycles - including downturns, recessions, and crises. Each one has eventually passed, and markets have recovered over time. Volatility is part of investing and something our strategies are built to manage.

Super is one of the longest-term investments you’ll ever have

Because super is typically invested over decades, it’s designed to ride out short-term market movements and deliver growth over time. Reactions to periods of volatility, after market downtowns, like switching investment options, can have detrimental long-term consequences.

Your investment strategy already takes your stage of life into account

If you're in a more conservative investment option - or you’re approaching retirement and in our lifecycle default option - your super is already exposed to less share market risk. This helps reduce the impact of volatility as you near retirement.

Why staying the course matters

Selling growth assets like shares after markets have dropped locks in losses and can mean missing out on the inevitable recovery. History tells us that trying to time the market doesn't usually work in investors’ favour. Staying invested allows your super to benefit when markets bounce back.

Advice and support is available

Before making any changes, consider speaking with a financial adviser. If you have a financial adviser, speak with them.
